Proper ventilation in a house is very essential for health, efficiency and hygienic conditions. If some rooms are not properly ventilated, suffocating conditions may develop in the room and no one would like to live in such a room. Hence while planning your dream home it should be ensured that each room is properly ventilated. In dense populated areas where natural ventilation in sufficient amount may not be possible, because of abutting walls of adjoining houses, artificial ventilation may be adopted.
Necessity of Ventilation:
- To create air movement and prevent suffocating conditions.
- To admit fresh air and push out the contaminated air.
- To prevent undue accumulation of carbon-di-oxide and depletion of oxygen content in the air.
- To prevent undue concentration of body odours, fumes, dust and moisture.
- To prevent undue concentration of bacteria carrying particles.
- To prevent condensation in the house.
- To remove body heat and heat evolved from equipments used in the house.
Considerations for good ventilation:
In order to achieve good natural ventilation in home following considerations may be followed:
- Inlet openings should be located on the wind ward side and at low level so that all parts of the room are uniformly ventilated. Outlet opening should be located on lee ward side near the ceiling in the side walls and if required, in the roof also.
- If inlet and outlet openings are located in the side walls then it should be ensured that the area of inlets is equal to the area of outlets.
- Outlet openings should be just opposite to inlets to ensure better cross-ventilation.
- The openings over the doors of back walls create good condition for cross-ventilation.
- More height of the room gives better ventilation.
- Inlet openings should not be obstructed by trees, partitions, adjoining buildings or other obstructions.
- If wind direction is variable, then openings should be provided in all the walls.
- Long narrow rooms should be ventilated by providing openings in short walls.
- Fans should be fixed to maintain proper ventilation in the room, when doors and windows are closed from inside. Height of fans should be fixed in such a way that a person sitting or sleeping in the room does not feel any draught.
- In sloping or pitched roof ventilators should be fixed at the ridge.
